Tomohito (寛仁)

HIH Prince Tomohito of Mikasa (寛仁), a member of the Imperial Family of Japan, passed away from multiple organ failure at Kyoundo Hospital in Chiyoda, Tōkyō at 15:35. A native of Hayama, Kanagawa, he was 66 years old.

皇族の寛仁親王殿下が、多臓器不全のため東京都千代田区の杏雲堂病院で15時35分に死去。神奈川県葉山町出身。享年66。
Born the eldest son of TIH The Prince and Princess of Mikasa, he studied at Gakushuin University and Magdalen College, University of Oxford. Involved in the field of social welfare for disabled people through his life, he helped promote sports for the disabled, also serving as presidents of a cancer research fund and a welfare institution for people with muscular dystrophy.

Known as the most outspoken member of the Imperial Family, he appeared in various TV shows and even DJed a radio progaram. He voiced opposition to the government's idea to allow children born to any princess and her non-imperial husband to succeed the throne. In 2007, he announced to the public that he had long been suffering from alcoholism.

He married Miss Asō Nobuko, styled HIH The Princess Tomohito of Mikasa today, in 1980, and had two daughters, TIH Princesses Akiko and Yōko of Mikasa.

"Even when he was in the hospital for cancer treatments, Prince Tomohito rarely wasted an opportunity to show off his sharp tongue.

He would snap at a doctor, “Your smock is dirty.” He also complained about the bad taste of hospital food.

However, whenever he left the hospital, he always thanked the staff with a smile and presented them with a written message of his appreciation.

Tomohito, known affectionately as "the bearded prince," died on June 6 after his long battle with cancer. He was 66."

"Prince Tomohito, a cousin of Japanese Emperor Akihito, died Wednesday after bouts with various ailments, the Imperial Household Agency said. He was 66.

Tomohito, sixth in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, died at a Tokyo hospital, where media reports said he had been receiving treatment and was in serious condition, suffering organ failures.

The Imperial Household Agency did not give a cause of death, but Tomohito had battled several illnesses, including throat cancer. He had undergone several cancer-related operations since 1991 and was treated for alcoholism in 2007. "
